After a dismal start against the Rockies on Sunday, the Padres are placing Jarred Cosart on the 10 day disabled list with an “elbow strain” per a report by AJ Cassavell. If you recall, Cosart just returned from a month long absence on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain, so it’s been quite a disappointing season for the oft injured 27 year old.
In a corresponding move, the team has promoted infielder Jose Pirela, who is only expected to stick with the big league club for a few days unless he can play his way into a longer stint. He made his debut in San Diego last season, but as was expected, he was overwhelmed at the plate as he mustered a paltry .154/.175/.205 slash line. Yet, he’s had an unexpected power surge in his return to AAA El Paso, jacking 13 long balls in 200 plate appearances while hitting over .300 in just 200 plate appearances.
Pirela will be immediately inserted into tonight’s lineup at left field and sixth in the order as Dinelson Lamet and the Padres square off against the Diamondbacks.
*An additional transaction was announced by the Padres as they transferred Travis Jankowski from the 10 disabled list to the 60 day disabled list because of his fractured right foot.
